What does the Tracking URL Auditor check?

Required UTMs

Checks for source, medium and campaign parameters commonly used for campaign attribution.

Formatting

Finds spaces, uppercase values, inconsistent parameter names and empty tracking values.

Duplicates

Detects parameters that appear multiple times and could create inconsistent analytics data.

URL health

Checks whether the URL is valid, uses HTTPS and contains tracking parameters in the expected query string.

Recommended core UTM structure

?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=paid_social&utm_campaign=summer_sale

utm_source identifies where traffic came from,utm_medium describes the marketing channel andutm_campaign identifies the campaign or promotion. Content and term parameters are useful when additional creative, audience or keyword detail is required.

What does “cleaned URL” mean?

PaidMediaKit can create a suggested version that standardizes common UTM formatting and removes duplicate standard UTM parameters. It does not invent missing campaign information or change your destination website.

Tracking QA before launch

A syntactically valid URL can still create messy attribution.

Consistency matters more than clever naming

UTM reporting becomes difficult when the same source or campaign appears with different casing, separators or abbreviations. A simple naming convention that the team follows is more useful than a highly detailed convention nobody maintains.

Keep platform macros intentional

Dynamic placeholders such as campaign, ad set, creative or keyword macros are useful, but only when the destination platform supports the exact syntax. Test a live click before rolling a template across an account.

Pre-launch tracking checklist

Confirm the final destination loads, required UTMs appear once, naming is consistent, dynamic placeholders resolve correctly, redirects retain the query string, and auto-tagging settings do not conflict with the reporting workflow you intend to use.

Problems the auditor cannot fully detect

  • A redirect or server rule that strips parameters after the first request.
  • A platform macro that is valid text but unsupported by the advertising platform.
  • Analytics configuration that ignores or rewrites campaign parameters.
  • Cross-domain or consent issues that happen after the landing page loads.
