What is CPC?

CPC stands for Cost Per Click. It measures how much you pay on average each time someone clicks your advertisement.

Calculate CPCCPC = Spend ÷ Clicks
Calculate ClicksClicks = Spend ÷ CPC
Calculate SpendSpend = Clicks × CPC

Example

If a campaign spends 2,500 and generates 5,000 clicks:

2,500 ÷ 5,000 =0.50 CPC

Is a lower CPC always better?

Not necessarily. A lower CPC means traffic is cheaper, but the quality of those clicks still matters. CPC should usually be reviewed alongside conversion rate, CPA, revenue and ROAS.

How to use CPC in account decisions

CPC tells you the price of traffic — not the value of the traffic.

When CPC is useful

CPC is useful when you are diagnosing why traffic volume changed, comparing auction cost across campaigns, or estimating how many clicks a fixed budget can buy. It is especially useful alongside CPM and CTR because those three metrics explain different parts of the same delivery chain.

What CPC cannot tell you

A cheaper click is not automatically a better click. Keyword intent, placement quality, audience mix and landing-page performance can make a higher-CPC campaign more efficient downstream.

Example: cheaper traffic can still cost more per conversion

Campaign A has a 0.50 CPC and a 1% conversion rate, implying roughly 50 in media cost per conversion. Campaign B has a 1.20 CPC but converts 5% of clicks, implying roughly 24 per conversion. CPC improved in Campaign A, but acquisition efficiency is still worse.

Common CPC review mistakes

  • Comparing Search CPC with social or display CPC without accounting for intent.
  • Optimizing for the cheapest clicks while ignoring conversion rate or lead quality.
  • Mixing reporting periods where auction pressure or campaign mix changed materially.
  • Treating platform-reported clicks as identical across every ad format and channel.
