What is CPA?

CPA stands for Cost Per Acquisition or Cost Per Action. It measures how much advertising spend is required to generate one conversion.

CPA FormulaCPA = Ad Spend ÷ Conversions

Example

If a campaign spends 5,000 and generates 125 conversions:

5,000 ÷ 125 = 40 CPA

Why compare against a Target CPA?

A target CPA gives performance context. A CPA of 40 may be excellent for one business and unprofitable for another. Comparing actual CPA against your target helps show whether acquisition efficiency is currently above or below goal.

From platform CPA to business economics

A CPA target is useful only when the conversion event is worth buying.

Define the acquisition event first

CPA can describe a purchase, lead, registration, demo request or another configured action. Two campaigns with the same CPA are not economically equal if one event is much closer to a real customer than the other.

Use target CPA as a constraint, not a verdict

The calculator can show whether current CPA is above or below a target, but it cannot tell you whether the target itself is realistic. Build targets from margin, close rate, repeat value and the quality of the event being optimized.

Example: lead CPA and customer CAC can be very different

If 100 leads cost 4,000, lead CPA is 40. If only 35 of those leads become new customers, media CAC is about 114. Both metrics are valid; they answer different questions and should not be substituted for each other.

Before reacting to a CPA change

  • Check whether conversion tracking or attribution changed.
  • Confirm the conversion event still represents the same quality threshold.
  • Review conversion volume; a small sample can make CPA move sharply.
  • Separate platform optimization CPA from true customer acquisition economics.
