What is CPM?

CPM means cost per mille, where “mille” means one thousand. In advertising, CPM is the cost of delivering 1,000 impressions.

CPM answers:“How much did 1,000 advertising impressions cost?”

CPM formula

CPM = Ad Spend ÷ Impressions × 1,000
2,500 spend ÷ 500,000 impressions × 1,000 =5.00 CPM

How to calculate impressions from CPM and budget

Impressions = Ad Spend ÷ CPM × 1,000
10,000 budget ÷ 8 CPM × 1,000 =1,250,000 impressions

This is useful when building an impression forecast from a media budget and CPM assumption.

How to calculate spend from CPM and impressions

Ad Spend = CPM × Impressions ÷ 1,000
12 CPM × 750,000 impressions ÷ 1,000 =9,000 spend

Cost per impression formula

Cost per Impression = Ad Spend ÷ Impressions

Cost per impression is CPM divided by 1,000. A 5.00 CPM equals 0.005 per impression in the same currency.

Why platforms report CPM instead.

Individual impression cost is usually a tiny decimal, so CPM is easier to read and compare.

What is average CPM?

Average CPM is the blended cost per 1,000 impressions over the selected reporting period. It can move because of auction competition, audience targeting, placement mix, geography, seasonality and inventory.

Lower CPM does not automatically mean better advertising.

Review CPM with CTR, conversion rate, CPA and ROAS before deciding whether cheaper impressions are actually more valuable.

Using CPM in media planning

  1. Start with a realistic CPM assumption. Use historical data or a labelled planning estimate.
  2. Convert budget into impressions. Use budget ÷ CPM × 1,000.
  3. Estimate reach and frequency. Translate impressions into unique exposure and repetition where relevant.
  4. Connect delivery with outcomes. Add CTR and conversion-rate assumptions when needed.

Common CPM calculation mistakes

  • Forgetting the ×1,000 factor.
  • Using spend and impressions from different periods.
  • Treating CPM as a conversion-efficiency metric.
  • Assuming forecast CPM stays constant as budget scales.
  • Comparing very different audiences or formats without context.
